Human Revolution Clothing began with a silly idea to make undies for yogis about five years ago! At the time I didn’t know the first thing about fashion or textiles or how to make something go from an idea to an actual physical thing. I started doing some research, beginning with what is the best fabric to use and why to make the best undies in the world. That was a pivotal point in my life. You see, I discovered textiles were second to oil as the dirtiest industry in the world. Today, over 90% of cotton grown in genetically modified and requires more toxic cancer causing chemical pesticides, insecticide and sprays than any other single crop. We actually ingest more cotton than we wear through cottonseed oil as a filler in many processed foods (think mayo, chips, candy) and cottonseed meal used as a “high protein feed” for conventional beef and dairy cattle (another reason to eat organic whole foods!) 🙁 Add to the mix child labor, inhumane working conditions, toxic and caustic washes, softeners and dyes, to make a long story short, from that moment I knew I found my life’s work.
Starting a business is a wild experience in and of itself. I’ve worked full time as a private sous chef while juggling my schedule to keep Human Revolution Clothing moving forward. For the first 2 years I didn’t even have a product, but I started sharing information as if I already had a clothing line. My community here on Kaua’i came together and through a party/silent auction I was able to raise enough money for my first trip to India where over 300,000 farmers have committed suicide in the past decade due the high cost and low yield of genetically modified chemical farming. While there I visited fair trade factories and met many farmers and their families, they shared their story and food with me while confirming that indeed, there needs to be a drastic change in the textile industry, and fast. For me, human connection has always been something I seek in life, I love to meet people, participate in their culture, learn from them what is really going on, how they feel, what they need and how I can help. Over the past three years I have been to India three times creating and piecing together a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified, Fair Trade supply chain of farmer co-ops, factories, NGO organizations that help women and more. For me, it boils down to this, business needs to be done with integrity.
Since the beginning I have been 110% dedicated to helping change the way clothing is made seed to shirt. I’ve shown myself and hope to show others, that we all hold so much power within, we can be the change, it only takes one person!! For anyone that has a passion out there, follow it! Life is too short to spend your time and energy behind something you don’t feel aligned with. There will be a lot of naysayers and people with doubt that will question you and your path, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THEM! Just because something isn’t happening, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be!! Follow your intuition, follow your passion, surround yourself with people who are supportive and encouraging and go for it, there are no failures, just opportunities to learn and try again!! You’ll be surprised how chance meetings and circumstances start showing up, it feels like magic!
